Ford’s new Ranger is a big improvement on the old model. For a pick-up, the Ranger is surprisingly good to drive. The steering is accurate – far better than you’d expect – and stability at high speeds is impressive. The ride is bouncy but that’s to be expected of a pick-up designed for heavy payloads. The Ranger felt less sure of itself in the lane-change test, but the caravan never seemed about to take charge.
With so much weight to haul, the 2.2-litre engine has its work cut out, as the 30-60mph time of 27 seconds shows. The engine is none too quiet as it goes about its work, either.
The full-size spare wheel and huge loadbay impressed our practicality judges. For such a big pick-up, 32.8mpg on the combined cycle is reasonable.
